The mission of Eduardo Romero "New Generation of Dance" is to nurture a culture of dance in Bacalar and also to preserve ballroom dancing as a cultural art and an enjoyable pastime. Formed as a non-profit organization in 2004, Danzón has trained many young people and entertained thousands with its performances in Bacalar and Chetumal, as well as in dance competitions throughout Mexico.
Classes are held Monday through Friday in the school secondary Vicente Guerrero Calle 14 between avenidas 7 and 9 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm for children and from 8:00 pm to 10:00 for teens and young adults, as well as visitors. Children are taught by Joselin White; teens and young adults by José Vásquez Archi. Classes include not only ballroom dancing but salsa, Danzón, "blues", tango and "paso doble." Contact Estela Gomez (983 834-2090 or estelagomeztrejo@hotmail.com) for information and schedule.
The organization offers special events twice annually. On February 15th, the anniversary of founder Eduardo Romero's death, a two-hour performance and presentation with guest dancers from Cancun and Mexico City is held in Bacalar. The following day, February 16th, a Memorial Dance performance is held in Bacalar. Each June 4th, a performance is held to commemorate the anniversary of the creation of Danzón.

Interested in supporting Danzón? There are lots of ways to help. You could donate clothes for the dancers' costumes, or you could donate the $500 to $1000 pesos it costs for a new outfit. A one-year scholarship for a single dance student costs $1000 pesos. And expenses for each out-of-town competition (transportation, lodging and food) typically costs $5000 pesos per person. Discuss your interest with Estela Gomez and she'll make sure you find the right way to help. 983 834-2090 or estelagomeztrejo@hotmail.com
