As you turn off the highway and onto the one-lane road leading to Juumyaxche, the jungle comes alive around you. Rocks, plants, flowers, birds, and animals entice the eye, ear and nose. Signs left and right tell the names of trees in Spanish and Mayan. Then, suddenly, beautiful Laguna Bacalar lies before you. 100 meters of grassy shore and sandy beach -- pure blue delight with a 35 meter long dock ideal for swimming and boating.
Palapas for shade, grills for cooking, large lawn for soccer, volleyball, and five hectares for birding, and a selection of grassy, shaded spots for pitching a tent or hammock -- it doesn't get too much better than this. A 24-hour velador can assist arranging boat tours, bicycle or kayak rentals, trips to nearby ruins, horseback rides, guided tours, a birding adventure, or a stroll along the lagoon. A large, modern bathroom facility with dressing areas, private showers, and men's and women's bathrooms overlooks the campground where you can enjoy a marvelous sky full of stars. Price is $50 pesos per person. Two cabañas (each with queen-size bed, hammock, table and chairs) are also available at $300 pesos per night.
Several clearly-marked nature trails with tree and plant names provide a simple connection to the surrounding jungle and allow guests the chance to encounter agouti, armadillo, javelina, coati, tapir, deer and a wide variety of small mammals. Learn about the medicinal uses of plants and be introduced to a variety of flowers and ornamental plants. A birders paradise, Juumyaxche has over 200 species in the immediate area including toucans, trogons, parrots, falcons, eagles, and others.
Guests should bring all the camping gear they need for their stay, as well as water, fuel and food. There is no restaurant or camp store. Juumyaxche is just 500 meters from Highway #307; depending upon weather conditions, the road into the campground may need to be driven slowly.
