The Bacalar Bicycle Tour is an excellent way to get to know the town and the lake. We start at the main square of this Pueblo Magico and visit the 18th Century Fort of San Felipe – built to protect early colonists from pirate raids and later seized by rebel Maya during the caste wars. The museum at the Fort is a wonderful way to discover and learn about this history. Next, a visit to the Church of San Joaquin adds more to the story. Finally, visitors see firsthand the role the lake played in the lives of the Maya, in historical times and the present.
